Goldberg OBE, Mr Andy

Mr Goldberg studied medicine at St Mary’s Hospital Medical School (Imperial College London) graduating in 1994. He obtained fellowship of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Ireland in 1997/8 and then spent a year in full time research working towards a higher degree (MD). His specialist training was on the North East Thames Rotation and he became a consultant in 2009.

Following specialist fellowships (see below), he spent a year as a consultant in Northampton before moving to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust in April 2010. He has a joint appointment with UCL (the world’s fourth highest ranking University), where he is a Clinical Senior Lecturer, within the UCL Institute of Orthopaedics and Musculoskeletal Science.

He chairs the Medical Futures Innovation Awards, has authored several text books, and is editor for the Clinical Talk Series, distributed by World Scientific Publications. He was awarded an OBE in the 2011 Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for services to medicine.

Research interests: Mr Goldberg runs a pioneering research program exploring regenerative medicine treatments, including cartilage transplantation; the effects of Stem Cell Therapy on Achilles Tendinopathy; and a national clinical trial comparing ankle replacements against ankle fusion. He was also responsible for the creation of the National Joint Registry for Ankle Replacements. He sits on the Scientific Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) and is leading on several national patient reported outcome measures’ projects including being the musculoskeletal lead of the Farr Institute of Health Informatics.

His Doctorate of Medicine (MD) thesis was awarded in 2006 by the University of London entitled, The Use of Human Autologous Chondrocytes and Mesenchymal Progenitor Cells in Cartilage Repair Techniques.
